East Wenatchee Rotary conducts annual fall cleanup of Valley View Cemetery
Members of East Wenatchee Rotary conducted our annual fall cleanup of Valley View Cemetery this year on Make a Difference Day, October 23.  This cemetery originated on November 14, 1914, when Union Trust Bank of Spokane deeded 2 3/4 acres to Douglas County for the purpose of establishing a cemetery.  Most of the burials took place in the 1920's and 30's, with the last interment in 1985.  Maryn Metzger was the first person interred, followed by Abraham Monesmith, who fought in the Civil War as a Private in the 48th regiment of the Indiana Volunteers.
Over time the cemetery became a victim of neglect and vandalism, and was in poor condition when adopted by East Wenatchee Rotary several years ago.  The club has performed routine maintenance and cleanup as well as headstone restoration and improvements of grounds, with a new fence on the south side and multiple other improvements.  Michael Machado has served as project leader.
